about

Born in Shizuoka, Japan near Mount Fuji, Mieko Shimizu aka Apache 61, dubbed the "Japanese drum'n'bass female Ninja" is from a truly musical family. Her father worked as a jazz bassist, her mother taught music and her brother Yasuaki is a well respected composer, producer and an acclaimed Japanese saxophonist.

Mieko's career began in her teens when she performed traditional Japanese songs in her father's band. She soon became interested in composing music and while studying English Literature at college in Shizuoka she took regularly tripsl to Tokyo to attend courses in jazz.

After graduation she moved to Tokyo and found herself involved in a range of diverse projects such as recording Japanese Tangos, singing and playing Jazz numbers in dubs, writing contemporary music, appearing on an album by Ryoidli Hattori and performing her own compositions with a 'Two Pianos & a Trumpet' band she formed with Indonesian pianist Pane Reser and trumpetist Jun Miyake.

It wasn't long before she became interested in ethnic music and so started collaborations with some of Tokyo's new Ethno-Jazz' musicians and creating music from a melting pot of cultural references.
About that time she was invited to join a team of composers at 'Hello/Goodbye', one of Japan's most successful music for ads agency. This led to seven years of composing jingles for brands such as Mazda, Bridgestone, Asahi Beer, Nissan, Coca Cola, Nestle and Laox.

Following a collaboration with composer, saxophonist and producer Yasuaki Shimizu on his album Dementos, recorded in London in 1988, she moved to England. There she began to focus on her own music.
Her first solo album 'Totem' was completed within a couple of months and released in the autumn of 1988. It combined Japanese melodies with African rhythms and Arabic overtones and won her critical acclaim particularly in the USA and in Europe.

Mieko has been a regular contributor on Law & Auder's highly themed concept albums.
