Mieko Shimizu/Apache 61, dubbed the "Japanese drum'n'bass female Ninja" by the press
Born in Shizuoka near Mount Fuji, Mieko comes from a musical family. Her father worked as a jazz bassist, her mother taught music and her brother Yasuaki is a well respected composer and producer as well as being the top Japanese saxophonist.

Mieko's career started in her teens when she began performing traditional Japanese songs and appearing in her father's band. She soon became interested in composing music, and while studying English Literature at college in Shizuoka she would regularly travel to Tokyo to attend courses in jazz .

After graduation she moved to Tokyo and found herself involved in diverse projects such as recording Japanese Tangos, singing and playing Jazz standards numbers in dubs, writing contemporary music, appearing in an album by Ryoidli Hattori, and performing her own compositions with a 'Two Pianos & a Trumpet" band she formed with Indonesian pianist Pane Reser and trumpetist Jun Miyake.

She soon became interested in ethnic music and started to collaborate with some of the new Tokyo' Ethno-Jazz' musicians creating their music from a melting pot of cultural references. At that time she was asked to join the team of composers at 'Hello/Goodbye', one of Japan's most successful music for ads agency, a partnership which led to seven years of composing jingles for brands such as Mazda, Bridgestone, Asahi Beer, Nissan, Coca Cola, Nestle, Laox...

After a collaboration with Yasuaki Shimizu on his album Dementos recorded in London in 1988 she moved to England to concentrate on her own music. Her first solo album 'Totem' was completed within a couple of months and released in the autumn of 1988. The album combines Japanese melodies with African rhythms and Arabic overtones and won her critical acclaim particularly in the USA and in Europe.
